The 2019 Meursault Charmes-Dessus 1er Cru has a fragrant bouquet with citrus fruit, popcorn, almonds and nicely integrated oak. It's potent, if maybe a bit too ostentatious for some. The palate is well-balanced, smooth in texture, almost creamy, with a countervailing thread of acidity. Lightly spiced and cohesive, the oak comes across prominently on the finish, although that should be enmeshed with time. Not bad, perhaps just missing a bit of grace. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

Smells almost too ripe and scented, a bit like boiled sweets (hard candy). A bit clumsy and broad though there's plenty of ripe fruit and unexpected freshness on the finish. (JH)
