Score 89/100 · Drink 1993-2001, Robert Parker, Oct 1993

The 1987s do not have the weight, richness, and multi-dimensional character of his 1984s, 1985s, and 1986s. But do not expect them to gather much dust on retailers' shelves. The 1987 Alexander Valley exhibits a big, dramatic, spicy, oaky, smoky nose that is also intermingled with aromas of herbs and black fruits. It offers a big, generous, supple mouthful of Cabernet fruit bolstered by adequate acidity. It is framed nicely by the vanillin notes of American oak. This is an elegant, smooth and forward Cabernet for drinking over the next 7-8 years.

Full red. Warm but exaggerated American oak aromas of scotch and chocolate, along with redcurrant and plum fruit notes and raw bell pepper and minty greenness. Juicy, moderately ripe red berry flavors framed by firm, harmonious acidity. No shortage of intensity. Finishes with dusty, rather fine tannins.
