The 2018 Coufran has a savory, meaty nose that lacks the freshness and precision of its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with a bitter entry, aggressive tannins and a dry, austere finish. I was expecting more from this Haut Médoc.

Based on 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2018 Château Coufran offers a juicy, lively bouquet of crunchy red and black cherries, leafy herbs, sandalwood, and new leather. I like its complexity. Medium-bodied, its focused, elegant texture and firm yet ripe, polished tannins all make for an impressive Haut-Médoc that will benefit from 2-4 years of bottle age and keep for a decade.

The 2018 Coufran offers good depth, but the aromas aren't entirely focused and the tannins are rather harsh. There is potential here if some of the angularity can be worked on. This is an especially earthy, rustic Haut-Médoc.
