The 2021 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru has a tightly wound bouquet that opens with aeration. Brambly red fruit, incense, tomato vine and pressed white flower aromas unfold in the glass. Returning after five minutes, it loses some of its initial delineation. The palate is grainy in texture with moderate depth, quite a good backbone but linear in style, and it is missing some flair on the conservative finish. A no-frills no-thrills Volnay, though it passes muster. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

The 2021 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru has a fragrant and floral nose that is just missing a bit of vigour. Pleasant tertiary scents percolate up with time, again, quite Pommard-like in style. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, a bit hard-edged at the moment with a rigid finish that pulls up a bit short.
