The 2021 Beaune Clos du Roi 1er Cru has an odd metallic reduction that occludes the red fruit behind it, a little off-putting in the scheme of things. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins. I appreciate the balance of this red, smooth and harmonious with tart red cherries and bergamot towards the light but focused finish. A '21 that "stays within its lane" and that's written as a compliment. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

The 2021 Beaune Clos de Roi 1er Cru, the first cuvée to be picked on 16 September, has a very endearing bouquet made of pure, quite floral, red fruit that conveys real buoyancy. Frame by fine tannins, the palate is harmonious and pure with a piquant finish. This is suave, elegant and a great success in a difficult vintage.
