Badia a Coltibuono always offers clean and authentic expressions of Sangiovese. The 2011 Chianti Classico is made with organically-farmed fruit and shows pretty intensity with dark cherry nuances, followed by blanched almond and lightly toasted pine nut. This estate prides itself on its non-interventionist's winemaking hand; the 2011 version of this base wine is incredibly successful in this regard (I preferred it to 2012). The warm vintage conditions have worked well against the cooler growing conditions in Gaiole-in-Chianti.

Attractive bronze colour. Cherry and sweet spice on the palate, a buck of acid on the palate and fine grained tannin. Good typicality but doesn’t thrill. (RH)
The 2011 Chianti Classico is a pretty, silky wine with good near-term appeal. Dark red stone fruits, dried flowers, tobacco and spices are layered into the supple, expressive finish. This is a solid showing from Badia a Coltibuono, but readers should not wait too long on the 2011; it is a wine to drink now.
Cask sample. Mid crimson. Fine, soft red-fruit nose. Lovely freshness with a little bite. Elegant and stylish. For drinking now. (WS)
