The 2019 Chenas Quartz has a tertiary bouquet - light red fruit, briar and touches of freshly-rolled tobacco filtering through with aeration. The palate is only slightly better with sharp acidity; it's slightly volatile with a spicy finish that needs more focus and finesse. I was expecting more from this.

Full bottle 1,315 g. A very small cru with granitic soil covered, unusually, by a top layer of crystal quartz. Selective harvesting, a long maceration with punchdowns and remontage, followed by a partial oak ageing. Caraway seed and leaf – a herbal, anise-led nose into a sweet-fruited, wild-raspberry palate; supple tannins turning Cirque du Soleil in the mouth. Buzzing with energy, but smoky and herbal enough to be pretty serious. Sinuous, muscular structure that in no way detracts from the ripeness and generosity of the fruit. (TC)
