Score 91/100 · Drink 2024-2038, Jeb Dunnuck, May 2021

The 2016 Barbaresco is forward with floral aromatics of fresh rose petal, rosemary, ripe raspberry, and anise. The palate is medium-bodied, with tangy cranberry fruit, orange peel, and dusty earth, and the mid-palate is lean, though it has vibrancy. Drink 2024-2038. The historic cellars of Marchesi di Barolo are located in the town of Barolo. With its origins in 1806, the Marquis of Barolo married Juliette Colbert de Maulevrier, a French noblewoman who went on to establish and build the cellar. The estate controls approximately 200 hectares within the Barolo and Barbaresco regions. Anna and Ernesto Abbona, along with their children Valentina and Davide, oversee the estate today.

The 2016 Barbaresco Tradizione moves over the palate with direct and silky intensity. Along the way, the wine imparts delicate tones of forest berry, wild cherry and rose hip. There are subtle hints of tar, button mushroom and tilled earth at the back. However, what I noticed most are the bright menthol notes that you get as the wine warms in the glass. This is a simple and easy-drinking Barbaresco to pair with your favorite pasta dishes. The wine is aged in botte grande only. Production is ample at 80,000 bottles made.
