Brilliant ruby. Aromas of spice-accented cherry and licorice on the pungent nose. Subtly sweet black raspberry and cherry flavors show good depth and power and pick up a peppery quality with aeration. Very good clarity and lift on the youthfully tannic finish, which features notes of bitter cherry and white pepper.

The 2013 Coudoulet de Beaucastel Côtes du Rhône offers a surprisingly ripe, rounded style to go with notes of wild strawberries, jammy black raspberry and peppery herbs. It’s drinking beautifully today, but it has good mid-palate density and I suspect will evolve nicely on its balance.

Mourvèdre, Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault. Mid crimson. Very spicy nose. Round and rich and no rough edges at all. Very distinctive. Fun and well judged. Muscular finish. (JR)
