The 2020 Fleurie Le Clos des Bachelards, a monopole of Château des Bachelards, offers plump blackberry, raspberry and touches of cooked meat on the nose. (I wonder if there’s a bit of Brettanomyces, but I don't think so). The palate is medium-bodied with a soft, plush entry. Black plum mixes with raspberry and touches of orange zest toward the finish. It’s nicely balanced and has an easy-drinking allure. If you’re not seeking complexity, this will satisfy the senses.

Certified biodynamic (Biodyvin). A walled 1.8-hectare monopole, vinified separately because it has blue clay in the soil as well as the pink granite, which is unusual. Two years in 30-hectolitre oak. Mid crimson. Darker-fruited and more intense on the nose; less scented and more savoury. Firm and spicy on the palate, with more fruit sweetness on the finish. Smooth tannins that add to the freshness. (JH)
