The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino (with 4,500 bottles made) offers great balance and a very pretty personality that is grounded in bright fruit (cherries), earthiness and crushed flowers. The wine is very smooth and integrated, most notably in terms of its polished tannins, and there is of course a spot of bright acidity on the close. It never reveals that it was in fact born in a hot, drought-prone vintage.

Mid ruby with the beginning of orange tinges. Brooding richness on the nose and sappy concentrated cherry fruit on the palate with bags of chewy tannins. Not the most complex, but nevertheless satisfying. (WS)

The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino keeps you coming back to the glass over and over again to take in its seductive bouquet of crushed sour cherries, spiced blood orange, minty herbs and hints of sweet smoke. It’s silky yet lifted in feel, energized by brisk acids that carry the mineral-tinged red berry fruits effortlessly across the palate. A twang of tart blackberries mixes with citrus zest through the moderately structured and classically dry finale. Sesta di Sopra did a wonderful job finding balance from the 2017 vintage. Give this a short stay in the cellar for maximum effect.
