The 2015 Sicilia Nerello Mascalese Ghiaia Nera shows a polished and brilliant dark ruby hue. This wine remains focused on the smallest aromatic details. You get forest berry, smoke, tar, spice and subtle volcanic ash. The wine is balanced and maybe a bit more fleshy and medium-bodied than past vintages have proven to be. This vintage is attractive and versatile nonetheless, and you get terrific value here. Some 70,000 bottles were produced.

Cask sample. Subtle and subdued on the nose. Fresh raspberry without any impact of oak. Light-footed on the palate with chewy tannins. Huge improvement on previous vintages and a clear move away from new oak. (WS)

A dusting of sweet spice mixes with tobacco, mint and crushed black cherry as the 2015 Etna Rosso Ghiaia Nera opens in the glass. This is still remarkably fresh and energetic, with rosy inner florals that resonate over a core of mineral-inflected strawberries. Inner earth tones mix with violet pastille as the 2015 finishes with a pleasantly chewy sensation. This is surprisingly lively and spry at ten years old.
