The 2016 Barbaresco Asili is understated, classy and gracious. Dried cherry, spice, leather, tobacco and mint are all nicely lifted. Ideally, I would like to see a bit more freshness and depth in a Asili Barbaresco, but the 2016 makes up for that with its appeal. Even so, I would prefer to drink the 2016 sooner rather than later, as it is a touch forward.

This is the first Barbaresco we tasted in a series of various single-vineyard expressions. The 2016 Barbaresco Asili is perhaps the most elegant and nuanced of the bunch, with fruit coming from 25-year-old vines. It shows fine raspberry, forest floor and wild blueberry aromas with violets, licorice and crushed stone. The finish is silky and smooth.

Barbaresco. Tasted blind. Deep ruby. Opulent cherry and sweet spice nose with hints of cherry cake. Supple and juicy with a fantastic layer of coating tannins. Can be approached now, but will gain in complexity. (WS)

Plenty of tar and plum character with full body, dense and chewy tannins and a long and powerful finish. Ripe fruit at the end. A wine for the future. Drink after 2021.
