Ripe black fruits, smoky tobacco, chocolate, and spicy wood all define the 2023 Château La Grave, a solidly built, medium to full-bodied, concentrated Pomerol that shows how successful this appellation was in the vintage. Based on 100% Merlot from gravelly soils and aged 16-18 months in 40% new French oak, it shows the denser style of the vintage, with sweet yet present tannins, ample mid-palate depth, and a great finish. Drink bottles over the coming 20 years or so. Drink 2026-2045.

The 2023 La Grave is a powerful, punchy wine. A burst of dark fruit, mocha, cloves and new leather makes a strong opening statement. Burly tannins frame it all nicely. In my view, the oak is a bit pushed. Otherwise, this is very nicely done.
The 2023 La Grave was one of my favourite Pomerols that didn't cut the mustard from barrel. Now in bottle, again, the aromatics fail to really click into gear, missing the vigor expected. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fine acidity, cohering toward the espresso and mint-tinged finish. Not bad, but could have been better. Early drinking.
