Score 92/100 · Drink 2026-2040, Neal Martin, Sep 2024

The 2020 Volnay Taillepieds 1er Cru has a lifted, perfumed bouquet. Touches of dried blood lend this a savory slant. The wine gains more purity with aeration and more Pinot Noir expression. The palate is medium-bodied with sapid red fruit, a fine sense of balance and finer tannins than its peers. It's spicy on the finish with a touch of peppercorns that leaves the mouth tingling after it has departed. The 2020 is molded by the vintage but not dictated by it. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

The 2020 Volnay Les Taillepieds 1er Cru has a perfumed, floral bouquet with rose petals infusing the raspberry and wild strawberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fine structure, lightly spiced with quite dense, almost muscular tannins towards the finish. A bit broad-shouldered perhaps but this has very good length and charm. Give it 4-5 years in bottle.
