With the black label, the 2017 Barolo Riserva Lazzarito is the most concentrated of these new wines from Ettore Germano, and it's also the wine from the hottest growing season. The 15% alcohol content reminds you of this fact. The bouquet is velvety and rich with plenty of dark fruit and spice. The wine is well put together and definitely quite robust and muscular in character. The tannins are smooth and the mouthfeel is open-knit and accessible. Only 4,500 bottles were created.

The 2017 Barolo Riserva Lazzarito is a powerful, dense wine. The Lazzarito has often been marked by intense oak. Thankfully, that seems to be less the case with the 2017. That said, the 2017 presents the aromatic and flavor signatures of a mature wine, so I would not push my luck on aging. Black fruit, tobacco, incense, melted road tar and licorice all build into the deep, resonant finish.

Palish ruby. Meaty red fruit nose with a touch of oak. Not the dark, embryonic brute I expected. Generous, polished fruit on the palate and with cherry, damson and prune notes. Enormously long, gravelly tannins. Ready now but will hold. (WS)
