A slight, south-facing slope in the middle of the plateau. Iron-rich clay over limestone sediments. Vines 90–115 years old. Deep crimson with dark pinky-purple rim. Dark and minerally as well as darkly fruited. Upright, structured, firmly built and yet utterly smooth and fresh. Lightly stemmy/herbal with aeration. Both powerfully long and intensely pure. Powerful and yet seems restrained. Professionally tailored. (JH)

The 2021 Blaufränkisch Ries Maissner was picked in two elevated parcels, one planted in 1908, and the other in 1934/1935, rooting in heavy iron-rich loam and clay on top of the volcanic plateau with some limestone sediments. A pure and serene note of cherry comes with a hint of blood, and a touch of conifer shows on the nose; more air brings a persistent sense of petrichor and wild blueberry. The palate is bright and luminous. Red cherry pierces through earthier, richer, denser tannins, helped along by super-bright acidity, veering from tart red cherry over to Morello and back again. There's exquisite balance and aromatic echoes of that tart cherry. (Bone-dry)
