The 2021 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru has a measured bouquet, well defined and quite floral in style with ample red fruit and incense. It gains complexity in the glass with Earl Grey and slightly incongruous dark chocolate scents over time. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, bright and tensile, developing unwanted caramel notes on the finish. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

The 2021 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru is straightlaced on the nose, without quite the verve of the Champans at the moment. The palate is defined by red plum and cranberry fruit, fine structure, building in weight towards a zesty finish. This will be thoroughly enjoyable in its youth.
