The Chateau Thenac 2014 Rouge is a blend of 68% Merlot, 21% Cabernet Sauvignon and 11% Cabernet Franc cropped at 54 hectoliters per hectare and matured in 50% new oak. Bright purple in color, it offers an attractive bouquet with black plum and boysenberry jam that is nicely defined. The palate is medium-bodied with soft tannin, a little powdery in texture, allspice and white pepper on the finish. This should be worth seeking out once in bottle. Tasted March 2015.

Cask sample. Dark purplish crimson. Very rich nose with real energy and some pepper. Polish and savour. Sinewy finish and only a little hint on the end that it’s not that opulent but it’s a very good 2014. No Malbec for the first time. But they say the Cab Sauvignon, 21%, was ‘great’. Denis Durantou and Vincent Dupuch consult for the Russian owner of this property just outside Côte de Castillon and have certainly injected some Église-Clinet magic.
