Score 94/100 · Drink 2024-2032, Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate, Aug 2024

The very expressive 2020 L'Etoile En Banode is a 60/40 blend of Chardonnay and Savagnin from a vineyard planted with the two varietals by Jean Gros in the 1970s. It matured as ouillé in a foudre for one year and then spent 32 months in 500- and 600-liter barrels with flor. The nose is super expressive with textbook aromas of green walnuts, celery and curry. The palate has pungent flavors and a very chalky and salty finish. Only 800 bottles were produced in April 2024.

The full-bodied 2020 L'Étoile En Banode is gorgeous. After spending the first 18 months in foudres with regular top-ups, the wine matured for 32 months _ sous voile_ in a combination of barriques and demi-muids . Swirling the glass reveals pronounced toasty aromas mixed with hazelnut, bread dough and wet stone nuances. Tight and austere, the bone-dry 2020 wins you over with its puristic personality. A toasty and saline aftertaste leaves a long-lasting impression.
