Unterloiben. 3.5-ha vineyard of super-stony soils of weathered gneiss and other material carried downstream by the Menthalbach. Very well drained. Certified Sustainable Austria. Lemon-lime, black raspberry. Wet shale, blackberries – takes me to childhood, picking blackberries on the slate banks of the Niagara River. Flavours last, dark in tone but brisk in feel. Lots of character here. (TQT)

The 2023 Grüner Veltliner Schütt Smaragd roots in deep, weathered gneiss deposited by the Mentalgraben gully, benefitting from cool airflows. A touch of citrus accompanies the fern notes of the nose and brings even more green, savory foliage. That lovely green, yeasty gentleness is even more present on the stony body, which has a distinct note of wet pebble. Lovely depth, stoniness, quiet understatement, really straight. This needs time to show its full colors. (Bone-dry)
