Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot blend. Winemaker Sam Middleton. See 2021 for background details. Shaded dark crimson. Just a tad dull. Muted. But maybe travelling under the alias ‘not overdone ’ ! (JR)

The 2016 Quintet offers up focused aromas of black currant, red currant and leafy herbs, with a nice little touch of licorice allsorts. A classic balance of powerful flavor and firm structure provides the perfect base to a long, vibrant finish. The 2016 is still so young and will sing for years to come.

Given the warmth of the season, the 2016 Quintet shows a lusty, throaty openness aromatically. It offers cassis, bramble, black cherry, layers of star anise and sweet roasted meats on the nose. In the mouth, the wine is perhaps more obvious and dark-fruited than usual, and this will set it up very well indeed for earlier drinking. It's a lovely wine without a shadow of a doubt, but one geared toward drinking earlier rather than cellaring longer. It'll age, no question, but since it's ready earlier than the other vintages, why not open sooner? 13.2% alcohol, sealed under natural cork.

There are mulberries, raspberries, red plums, cassis and blueberries, as well as nice, spicy and cedary oak, fresh leaves and foresty notes. Youthful and very assertive. The DNA is all here. The cabernet is leading the wine here. There’s a powerful and uncompromising tannin core that bodes well for the future. Powerful and still deliciously elegant. Give this time to arrive and settle. It’s all here. Try from 2024.
