Score 89/100 · Drink 2014-2018, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, Oct 2014

The 2009 Alto Adige Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon Iugum is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in barrique of which only a third are new. Indeed, this dark ruby mountain red opens to pretty renderings of spice, blackberry, honey, tar, cola and balsam herb. Tertiary or aged aromas of licorice and smoke are gaining traction. The close reveals notes of raw spice, sour fruit and a rustic personality.

The 2009 Iugum bursts from the glass with racy dark red fruit, savory herbs and spices. Rich and voluptuous yet classically Alto Adige in its mid-weight structure, the 2009 impresses for its overall balance and depth. Today, the aromas and flavors remain undeveloped, so readers will have to give the 2009 at least another year or two in bottle.
