A pure expression of Cabernet Franc, the 2011 Bolgheri Superiore Dedicato A Walter has been upgraded from a Toscana IGT to a Bolgheri Superiore with this vintage. This is a monumental effort with pristine aromas of dark fruit, spice, pipe tobacco, Spanish cedar and ground espresso. The aromas are presented in wide strokes with ripe tannins and a touch of berry sweetness on the close. I can only imagine pairing a wine of this build with a succulent cut of red meat and spicy barbecue sauce.

Dark red cherry, plum, mocha, cloves and licorice meld together in the 2011 Dedicato a Walter. Rich and sumptuous in the glass, the 2011 captures the essence of Cabernet Franc in Bolgheri. A measure of freshness is missing in this warm, precocious vintage, but all the elements are in place just the same. The long, resonant finish is especially appealing. I would prefer to drink the 2011 over the next handful of years, before the fruit starts to fade.
