La Morra. Just mid ruby. Lifted sour cherry and redcurrant on the nose with an undertow of white pepper and what looks like a touch of oak. Light red-fruit palate that, in its lightness, defies the 15% abv on the label. Lots of gravelly tannins and really light on fruit on a finish that also shows a little heat. (WS)

Aged in oak for three years, the Francesco Rinaldi & Figli 2021 Barolo Brunate leans into savory tones of spice and tobacco leaf with dried cherry and blackcurrant. The bouquet hints at tertiary definition with faded primary fruit. This estate farms two hectares in Brunate with limestone clay soils. It's hard to ignore the powerful 15% alcohol content in this wine. Production is 10,000 bottles.
The 2021 Barolo Brunate is another compelling wine from Rinaldi. Floral overtones meld into a core of dark red and blue-toned fruits. In this tasting, the Brunate is surprisingly gentle relative to the other wines in the range. That is somewhat unexpected, but also something that works. Hints of lavender, licorice, cloves and coffee build effortlessly, framed by insistent tannins that extend the finish.
