Score 89/100 · Drink 2002-2014, Robert Parker, Oct 2001

The aromatically complex, medium to full-bodied, dark garnet-colored 1998 Barbaresco Bricco Asili-Bricco Asili offers intense aromas of soy, black cherries, tobacco, spice box, licorice, and incense. With ripe but noticeable tannin and excellent length, this potentially outstanding Barolo needs several more years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2014. Medium red. Slightly medicinal aromas of cherry cough syrup and dark chocolate. Good texture on entry, then slightly tough in the middle, with intrusive acids giving the wine a sweet/sour quality. Doesn't appear to have quite enough buffering extract to completely support its mouthcoating tannins. These somewhat loosely knit '98s will be bottled next February.
