Ruby-red. Rich aromas of black cherry, licorice, coffee and chocolatey oak. Thick, dense and serious; a rather powerful wine with a medicinal austerity. Rich flavors of bitter cherry, licorice and spices. A big, chewy wine whose rather tough tannins may well require a decade of patience. Very different in style from the more outgoing Echezeaux.

(mostly from a 1972 planting, the rest from 1986) Deep red-ruby. Currant, roasted plum, spices, coffee, menthol and roasted nuts on the nose. Silky and thick on entry, then dense and tough in the middle, with aggressive flavors of menthol and mocha and some unrefined tannins. Boasts very good depth and length, but this is not one of the vintage's typically gentle Clos Vougeots. Forey agrees that this will need a later bottling.
