Score 88+/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Mar 2004

Deep red. Aromas of cherry, chocolate and coffee. Round and fat, with complex hints of berry jam, licorice, tobacco, spice and menthol. Not a sweet style but has plenty of volume. Then drier and rather clenched on the finish. Forey says the 2002 is suppler and has less rustic tannins, leading me to believe that the new vintage is going through an awkward stage now.

Full ruby-red. Black cherry, licorice and mint on the nose. Fat, rich and full but almost heavy after the Echezeaux. The primary, rather raw character of the fruit is accentuated by notes of bitter chocolate and mint. Finishes with tongue-shattering tannins that will require further aging in barrel (and extended cellaring).
