Score 93/100 · Drink 2028-2038, Jeb Dunnuck, Nov 2025

The flagship cuvée here, the 2023 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Des Cadettes sees a touch more oak élevage and comes from 40% Mourvèdre, 35% Grenache, and 25% Syrah aged 18 months in foudre and demi-muids. Deep ruby-hued and semi-opaque, it shows ripe red and black berries, spring flowers, and peppery herbs on the nose. It's medium-bodied, focused and tight, with a more narrow mouthfeel and polished tannins. While not more concentrated than the classic cuvée, it should still benefit from a few years of bottle age and keep for 10-15 years. Drink 2028-2038.

Partially destemmed and matured in a mix of new barrels (25%), foudres (50%) and used barrels, the 2023 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee des Cadettes is a resounding success, confirming the estate’s stylistic evolution toward greater charm and accessibility in youth while retaining a deep, concentrated backbone. Aromas of lilac, rose, dark cherries and garrigue introduce a medium- to full-bodied palate that is seamless and enveloping, with a fleshy core of fruit, velvety tannins and a sappy, energetic texture. Concluding with an ethereal, delicate finish, this blend of 40% Mourvèdre, 35% Grenache Noir and 25% Syrah is a great performer.
