Bright purple. Aromas of dark berries, pungent flowers and smoky herbs, with a bright mineral overtone. At once fleshy and energetic, offering vibrant blackberry and bitter cherry flavors underscored by a crackling mineral element. Gains sweetness with air and finishes with excellent clarity, focus and length, leaving pure dark berry notes behind. (JR)

The Clos de la Roilette 2011 Fleurie Cuvee Tardive – representing, as usual, Coudert’s interpretation of this site from some of his oldest (octogenarian) vines and intended for longer cellaring than its stable mates – brims with ripe blackberry and elderberry underlain by wet stone and laced with pungent herbs and mouthwatering salinity. Opaque ruby. Slow-to-open aromas of dark berries, cherry compote, licorice, black tea, violet and smoky minerals, with a hint of blood orange in the background. Smooth, seamless and precise, with deep dark fruit flavors and notes of bitter chocolate and floral pastilles that gain strength with air. Sappy and very persistent on the structured finish, which echoes the cherry and licorice notes. I had the chance to taste (and drink!) this wine at least a half-dozen times, three of them from magnum, and feel severe, baby-killing remorse; no way you should be opening one of these for a very long time, unless I?m there. Picked at the same time as the straight Clos de la Roilette – tardive applies to when to drink it. 80-year-old vines. Much more intense, meatier vines than the regular bottling, but still not edgy. Pretty relaxed and casual compared with some. Relatively dense. (JR)
