(16.6% alcohol) Full medium ruby. High-toned, superripe, slightly porty aromas of black fruits and bitter chocolate. Hugely rich and creamy, but just short of heavy. Finishes with very ripe, slightly dusty tannins. Today I don't find quite the same verve as the inaugural 2002 vintage displayed at a similar age, but this is a very satisfying mouthful for early drinking.

Back in the more blockbuster style, the saturated ruby-colored 2003 Pinot Noir Zio Tony Ranch has big perfume of jammy strawberries, cherries, rose petals, and earth. The wine offers impressive fruit, medium to full body, and a beautiful, voluptuous palate and long finish. This is impossible to resist, although I think the wine has enough structure and depth to age nicely for at least a decade. Tel. (707) 525-0570; Fax (707) 525-9463

Martinelli

Martinelli is a Sonoma benchmark for vineyard-designate bottlings—wines built to highlight how strongly a single site can shape Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah, and Zinfandel. Across the range, the focus stays consistent: small-production bottlings that feel distinctly tied to where they’re grown.
