The ruby/garnet 1998 Brunello di Montalcino presents a smoky vanilla nose with ripe plum fruit and a hint of raisins, signs of a hot vintage. Medium-bodied with good definition and focus, the wine is long, pure, and well made. Its medium weight and length indicate that this was a good but not superior vintage for this house. Good deep red. Complex, brooding aromas of blackcurrant, mocha, licorice, underbrush and sweet oak. A suave, juicy midweight, with tangy, penetrating, moderately ripe berry and licorice flavors framed by bright acidity. Nicely vibrant Brunello that offers lovely definition and class. Finishes with rather suave, firm tannins that avoid the dryness shown by so many '98s.
