Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes 2011 from Jacques Prieur has an odd and incongruous nose: overtly much more tropical than its peers and consequently more akin to a warm climate Chardonnay than Burgundy. The palate is sweet and rounded, coming across very commercial with little sense of terroir or tension. Oddly enjoyable, but in a very commercial sense.

(bottled two weeks prior to my visit): Bright, pale yellow. Pear and white peach on the nose, lifted by a strong floral quality. Dense, concentrated and nicely balanced, with lovely Puligny clarity to the sappy, chiseled flavors of white fruits, spices and flowers. A bit youthfully imploded today but the wine's excellent flavor intensity is plain to see. Finishes classy, dry and long.
