Score 92/100 · Drink 1999-2009, Robert Parker, Apr 1999

The 1994 Command Shiraz is possesses slightly high alcohol (14.5%). It possesses massive fruit extraction, tons of new American oak, low acidity, and layers of chewy, glycerin-imbued, concentrated fruit. It should drink well for another decade. I suspect This wine will become more civilized and less exuberant with bottle age. Elderton's wines are not for tasters seeking subtlety and elegance. This is an outrageously oaky, flamboyantly-styled offering with immense hedonistic appeal. Imported by The Australian Premium Wine Collection, John Larchet, USA Wine West LLC, San Rafael, CA; tel. Deep red-ruby. Port-like but very fresh aromas of crushed blackcurrants, chocolate, mocha and new oak. Fat, sweet and oaky in the mouth, with elevated alcohol. A real wave of fruit, but the flavors tend toward prune and lack delineation. Dominant note of vanillin oak. A big, inelegant mouthful that some tasters will like more than I did. Slightly tart-edged finish, with a note of scotch; perhaps a bit dried by the oak.
