“This represents the best cask in the cellar,” said Armin Diel. “It was supposed to be destined for Grosses Gewächs, but along the way it tasted so sensational that Caroline made the recommendation: ‘Spätlese’.” That was a good call! Ravishingly succulent white peach and tender but tangy strawberry are wreathed in a diverse bouquet of flowers and vibrantly infused with nuanced stony, crystalline, and saline elements. The sense of levity here is nearly weightless and the creaminess seductively caressing. Yet there is lingering primary juiciness and animating brightness to charge the entire performance with almost electric energy. Here is a haunting example of distinctively 2014 vintage virtues that will live and quite possibly further blossom for decades.

The 2014 Pittermännchen Riesling Spätlese is deep and complex on the nose, full-bodied, firm and pretty sweet; but it is also transparent, elegant, straight, piquant, and full of finesse and tension. This Spätlese is still on its way and should be cellared for another six years or more.
