Tasted out of a three liter, the stunning 1999 Barolo Vigna Enrico VI is one of those wines that’s drinking brilliantly yet still on the young side. Beautiful red cherry and currant fruits, spice box, licorice, and crushed flower notes all emerge from the glass, and I just love the freshness and purity, as well as the complexity. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated, and perfectly balanced on the palate, with still present tannins, I suspect regular 750-ml bottles will be more advanced but those should certainly have another decade of longevity as well.

The 1999 Barolo Enrico VI, whose grapes come from the Villero vineyard in Castiglione Falletto, features ripe, almost jammy, plum and black cherry fruit, cinnamon, and cloves. Denser, longer, and more structured than the other two Barolo offerings, which come from La Morra, it shows more tar and licorice, more tannin, and a greater intensity. (aging in all Taransaud barriques, 50% new, down from 100% in 1996) Bright, deep red. Strawberry, redcurrant, minerals, game and spicy, smoky oak on the nose. Juicy red fruit flavors nicely framed by lively acids. Finishes with somewhat tough tannins and a bit of warmth, but also good cut.
