Richly nuanced aromatics at 16 years old. As it opens, sweet tobacco, saffron, liqourice bud come to the fore, with savoury rather that sweet blackberry fruits, extremely well balanced, walking a tightrope between young and older fruit. Classic and old school in the best way, extremely drinkable with a gorgeous fresh touch and saline twist on the finish. One to recommend. 70% new oak. A wine that begs to be drunk with food.

The 2005 Rochebelle is an attractive, mid-weight Saint-Émilion distinguished by floral, high-toned aromatics and red-toned fruit. Iron, dried herbs, tobacco and cedar develop later, adding further nuance. The tannins are a bit hard, but there is plenty to like too.
This lower pedigree wine represents undeniable quality/value rapport in 2005. This vintage is so deep in quality among the better run, less heralded estates, that these wines should appeal to readers looking for terrific values from Bordeaux. Most of these wines are Merlot-based and will be drinkable young. Sleeper of the vintage.
