The 2006 Etranger Cabernet Sauvignon was sourced from the Greenock sub-region of Barossa and contains a bit of Shiraz. Purple-colored and slightly muted aromatically, notes of spice box, damp earth, mineral, and blackberry make an appearance. On the palate it has a supple texture and attractive flavors but lacks the depth and concentration for an outstanding rating. The Colonial Estate is the Australian project of Englishman and Bordeaux chateau owner Jonathan Maltus. His first vintage in Australia was 2002. The entry level wines are line-priced at $30 offering excellent bang for the buck. Importer: Single Vineyard Imports, www.maltus.com

(90% cabernet sauvignon and 10% shiraz) Deep, bright-rimmed ruby color. Very spicy aromas of pungent red and dark berries, dried violet, incense and botanical herbs. Round and sappy, with sweet cherry and blackcurrant flavors, juicy acidity and gentle tannic grip. This became more powerful with air, taking on subtle espresso and bitter chocolate character. Leaves ripe cherry and plum notes behind on the long, chewy finish. This needs time to unwind.
