Score 94/100 · Robert Parker, Jun 2013

The 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon was aged 19 months in about two-thirds new French oak, and achieved 14.7% alcohol. The wine reveals a sensational nose of creme de cassis, graphite and spring flowers as well as a beautiful texture and a wonderful starting point, mid-palate and finish. A pure, unmanipulated, stylish yet complex, majestic Cabernet Sauvignon, it should age effortlessly for two more decades. There is always something about Larkmead’s Cabernets that reminds me of the great Pauillac estate adjacent to Mouton Rothschild, Alfred Tesseron’s Pontet-Canet. This exquisite, historic (the vineyard was well-known in the 1800s) source for great Cabernet Sauvignon situated on the valley floor, just north of St. Helena, remains one of my favorite wineries of the region. Under the guidance of the winemaking consultant, Scotsman, Andy Smith, they continue to go from strength to strength. Tel. (707) 942-0167; Fax (707) 942-6934

Full ruby-red. Brooding aromas of cassis and menthol, with a whiff of sweet butter. Dense and chewy on the palate, with spicy flavors of currant, bitter chocolate and espresso. Less fruity than the Firebelle, but more serious-and more cabernet.

Ruby-red. Pure but subdued aromas of currant, leather and licorice. Fresh, spicy flavors of cassis, black cherry and licorice. A somewhat cooler style of cabernet with a note of tea leaf. Less thick than the 2002 but has density. Finishes with broad, dusty tannins and a lingering note of licorice.
