Charles Heintz is perched just outside the town of Occidental, situating it directly in the face of coastal influences. The eroded, meagre sandstone soils drive the old vine roots deep into the bedrock. Plenty of concentration. Nervy acidity, stone-fruit characters, mineral and slightly saline on the palate. A fine Chardonnay which is a million miles from the richer old-school Sonoma style. (AWH)

The 2019 Chardonnay Charles Heintz Vineyard is a classic wine from this site. Rich, creamy and layered, the Heintz has that oily texture that is such a signature here. Apricot, tangerine oil, mint, spice and brown butter lend notable complexity. Exotic tropical overtones compensate brighter saline nuances that lend tension to balance some of the more overt qualities that come so naturally.

Cool ocean air moderates the direct sunshine. Pale straw. Lightly smoky nose. Really rich palate impact – actually quite rich for a Sonoma Coast wine. And with quite a bit of chew.
