The 2000 Vosne-Romanée Aux Brûlées 1er Cru is outshone by Leroy’s millennial Beaumonts. This has a deep hue with wide bricking on the rim, scents of briary, soy and dried blood that is indicative of a wine firmly into its secondary stage. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine line of acidity and touches of hoisin infusing the red berry fruit that segues into a slightly ferrous finish with just a touch of dryness suggesting this should be consumed in the not too distant future. Tasted at Carré des Feuillants restaurant in Paris.

Bright medium red. Fruit-driven aromas of red cherry, raspberry and flowers, complicated by mocha and balsamic nuances. The palate offers lovely finesse and precision of sweet pinot fruit, lifted by a floral element and complicated by a slightly decadent saline quality. In a silky, seamless style, showing moderate depth and grip but good persistence. Owing to its soft acid/tannin structure, this is easy to drink right now.
This is one big wine with its powerful, extremely rich and ripe fruit and flavors that are wonderfully spicy, intense and quite concentrated. Thick, long, extremely complex and persistent though the ripeness of the structure suggests that this will probably peak a few years before the Clos Rognets. There is plenty of personality together with buckets of really seductive Vosne spice. Drink: 2009-15
