Score 90+/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, May 2013

Saturated deep red with ruby tones. Dark raspberry, black cherry, smoked meat and a whiff of black tea on the nose. Plush, concentrated and sweet, showing an almost chocolatey ripeness but strong framing acidity to the dark fruit flavors. This very ripe wine shows an almost bitter edge on the firmly tannic finish but appears to have the flesh to support its structure.

The 2010 Pinot Noir Russian River Valley is a big, juicy, exuberant wine loaded with character. Plums, black cherries, menthol, licorice and sweet spices all literally explode from the glass. This dark, full-bodied Pinot is loaded with Russian River character. The 2010 isn’t particularly subtle, but it is flat-out delicious in its huge fruit and generous, inviting personality. Readers who love rich Pinots will flip out over the 2010. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2020. I hadn’t tasted Merry Edwards’ wines in a few years, so it was great to get reacquainted with one of my favorite Russian River properties. This year, I was especially impressed with the appellation Pinots, which are the wines I would focus on, as the vineyard-designates aren’t always meaningfully better. Tel. (707) 823-7466
