Score 89/100 · Drink 2002-2006, Robert Parker, Jun 2002

Luna's 1999 Sangiovese may be the finest wine made from this varietal in California. It possesses flavor dimension and texture not found in the majority of other efforts. The dark plum/ruby color is followed by aromas of strawberries, crushed black cherries, new saddle leather, and earth. It is medium-bodied, with an intense mid-palate, a texture that builds nicely, and a supple, lush finish offering a touch of acidity and tannin for definition. It will drink well for 3-4 years. Tel. Lively, well balanced, sweeter than most, very ripe but creditable. Breathes life into the Cal-Italia fad. (JR)

Full red. Intriguing nose melds black cherry, currant, herbs and tobacco leaf, along with grapey and saline elements. Denser and riper than the young 2000, with more texture and sweetness. The tannins are serious, but this wine has more buffering extract in the middle and more finishing sweetness. Very strong California sangiovese.
