The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Chaumes 1er Cru has an understated bouquet, tightly wound with crushed stone percolating through the red berry fruit. The lightly spiced, medium-bodied palate displays an attractive grainy texture, good tension and a precise if slightly rigid finish that will soften with time. Good potential.

The 2018 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Chaumes wafts from the glass with an inviting bouquet of orange rind, peonies, red berries and ripe cherries. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, with an enveloping attack and a generous core of ripe, sweet fruit that's balanced by some fine, chalky tannins and lively acids. This is a youthfully head-turning bottle of Les Chaumes in the making.

Here the very fresh and pure nose is spicier still with notes of anise, hoisin, sandalwood and floral nuances that add a touch of elegance to the mostly red berry scents. The vibrant and tension-filled medium-bodied flavors are firmer and perhaps less seductive than usual but also longer and more structured than usual. I would add that it's rare when this wine is at more or less the same level as the Murgers or the Boudots but at this admittedly early stage, it appears that it is. We will of course see in time but for now, I find this to be very impressive in 2018.
