The 2005 Jean-Faure is a potent wine. Heavy torrefaction notes come through in both the wine's flavors and overall feel. There is plenty of depth, but the oak is overpowering. Dark cherry, cedar, mocha, vanillin, espresso and sweet spice are all kicked up in this dense, potent Saint-Émilion. I find the oak imprint overpowering, as this Cabernet Franc-driven Saint-Émilion feels constricted by the wood.

Dark, bright, crimson. According to the label, just 12.5 per cent! Savoury, meaty, I wouldn’t be surprised to learn this was farmed with minimal chemical inputs. Very gentle. Lovely texture yet no shortage of flavour and the tannins are beautifully hidden. Very fresh and revitalising. Silky satin plus life. Definitely one to watch. (JR)
