Score 90/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, May 2009

Saturated ruby. Highly aromatic nose delivers cassis, smoked meat, crushed rock and black pepper. Dense and sweet, combining an almost roasted Chateauneuf du Pape-like character with very good inner-palate energy. The black fruit flavors are perked up by a peppery quality that lifts the wine's aftertaste. Tannins are chewy and substantial. This fruit comes from York Creek Vineyards on Spring Mountain, at an altitude reaching 2,000 feet.

The 2006 Petite Sirah Pepperland is appropriately named. Aggressive oak and spice as well as background blue and black fruit aromas jump from the glass of this medium to full-bodied, tannic, closed, angular, and astringent effort. There is a lot buried under the surface, and while time in the bottle will be helpful, it may not be enough to bring this wine into total harmony. Now that the highly talented Robert Foley is no longer the full-time winemaker at Pride Mountain Vineyards, he appears to be focusing on his own label as well as consulting for other wineries. Tel.
