Light fox red. Lightly medicinal nose. Almost porty. Sweet and open and with a hint of coffee, and molten brown sugar. Spine of fruit and quite a bit of charm. Good structure but perhaps just a little bit overripe? Reasonably jewelly. Much lighter and more 'pointed'/jagged than the Jayer 1997. (JR)

The medium to dark ruby-colored 1997 Echezeaux offers a nose packed with dark cherries and notes of grilled oak. This is a large, masculine, structured wine, crammed with blackberries and cassis. It is rich, sweet, complex, medium to full-bodied, and has an admirably persistent finish. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2009. Importer: Martine's Wines, San Raphael, CA; tel. (415) 485-1800.
