The 2016 Pinot Noir Keefer Ranch offers a big perfume of rose petals, strawberries, sappy forest floor, and spice. It’s medium-bodied and elegant on the palate, with good acidity, yet the focus is on its core of sweet red fruits. Readers looking for a serious lineup of single vineyard Pinot Noirs and Chardonnay that have a distinctly Burgundian vibe need to check out these releases from Ehren Jordan and Savanna Wright. Failla owns prime terroirs on the Sonoma Coast, as well as has access to some of the best vineyards in the region. While these aren’t for those craving big, powerful wines, they have plenty of intensity as well as singular profiles. In addition to the Sonoma releases, Jordan’s Oregon releases and a few Rhône variety wines are also included in this report.

The 2016 Pinot Noir Keefer Ranch is powerful and dense. Succulent dark cherry, plum, licorice, smoke, leather and game run through this mid-weight, somewhat rustic Pinot. It will be interesting to see if time softens some of the angular edges that are present today. Today, the Keefer is a wine of density and gravitas.
Pale to medium ruby-purple colored, the 2016 Pinot Noir Keefer Ranch leaps from the glass with Bing cherry, crushed raspberries and wild strawberries notes plus wafts of lavender, mossy bark and underbrush. Medium-bodied, fine, delicately played and refreshing in the mouth, it has a soft frame and just enough freshness, finishing with compelling restraint. 690 cases produced.
