The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Vintner’s Select (100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged 20 months in 40% new French oak) is also an exceptional effort. It boasts a deep purple color along with a classic bouquet of spring flowers, black currants, blackberries, vanillin and graphite. This forceful, rich, well-balanced Cabernet possesses well-integrated acidity, tannin, alcohol and oak. Drink it over the next 10-15 years. As always, this winery situated at the crest of Spring Mountain on both sides of the Napa/Sonoma counties boundary, has turned out a portfolio of interesting as well as satisfying wines. Amazingly, Pride Mountain Vineyards now owns over 85 acres at high elevation sites spread over the top of Spring Mountain. Pride Mountain’s two flagship offerings are much more limited in availability, with only 569 cases of the 2010 Claret Reserve and 1,365 cases of the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve. Tel. (15.4% alcohol; 85% from clone 337, which Steve Pride describes as more feminine): Bright, saturated ruby-red. Very ripe, porty, high-toned aromas of blueberry, mocha and nutty oak, with hints of resin and underbrush. Deep and dense but aggressive in the mouth, with some alcoholic warmth and an edge of acidity making this rather awkward today. The tannins are a tad dry on the finish, which also shows a tired note of nut skin. Pride's regular cabernet bottling is much fresher. I tried three different bottles of the Vintner Select.
