Score 92/100 · Drink 2022-2030, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Jan 2021

The 2018 Syrah Estate Wild Mountainside is impressive. Rich, heady and explosive, the Wild Mountainside takes hold of all the senses with its deep aromatics and insistent, driving feel. Bright red-toned fruit, blood orange, cinnamon, spice, mocha and sage are some of the many aromas and flavors that open in the glass. The Wild Mountainside is the former Russian River bottling. It is especially fine in 2018.

The 2018 Syrah Wild Mountainside was made with about one-third whole clusters and includes about 5% Viognier. Medium to deep ruby-purple, it has gorgeous aromas of smoked meats, crushed blackcurrants, mint leaves, bitter chocolate, violet and blueberries. Medium to full-bodied, it's well managed in the mouth, restrained but deeply flavored, with a fine, grainy frame and fresh, uplifted finish. About 500 cases were made.
